These places were often built in the mountains or near the sea, where the air was thought to be especially healthy. Patients might spend long hours resting on porches, taking short walks, eating regular meals, and following strict routines. Some sanitariums were calm and beautiful, while others felt lonely or severe. A famous example is the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in Saranac Lake, New York, later known as the Trudeau Sanatorium.
Still, treatment for TB was very limited at the time, so these places did not always lead to recovery. For some people, a sanitarium was a place of hope; for others, it was where they spent their final years.
Today, with effective antibiotics and modern medical care, dedicated sanitariums are rare. The word is now mostly historical, and when it appears in books, films, or conversation, it often suggests an older medical world shaped by long stays, strict routines, and slow recovery. In some contexts, it can also mean a health resort or recovery center, but that use is less common.
