Some very large dust-filled storms are called haboobs.

These storms are most common in arid and semi-arid regions like the Sahara Desert, the Middle East, parts of Australia, and the American Southwest.

While often visually dramatic, appearing as towering walls of swirling particles, sandstorms are not just striking to look at. They can sharply reduce visibility, making travel dangerous or impossible. The fine particles carried by these storms can get into clothing, vehicles, and machines, causing damage and disruption. More seriously, they can irritate the eyes and lungs and can make conditions like asthma worse.

Some storms are brief and local, while larger ones can spread across huge areas and last for hours or even days. Dust from major storms can travel very long distances, sometimes crossing seas or continents. In many places, these storms have also become part of local stories and traditions, where they are seen as powerful and sometimes frightening forces of nature.

The term "sandstorm" is sometimes used interchangeably with "dust storm," but technically a sandstorm contains a higher proportion of sand particles while a dust storm consists primarily of finer silt and clay. Regardless of the specific composition, both represent powerful displays of nature's force and can have significant environmental and societal impacts.
