Imagine a tiny bird hurrying along the edge of the ocean, stopping now and then to peck at the wet sand. That is often a sandpiper. These small shore birds are known for their quick, busy movements as they look for worms, insects, and other small creatures to eat. They are common along beaches, mudflats, and other wet coastal places, and some also appear near lakes and marshes inland. If you see a small bird running close to the waves and searching for food with its bill, it may well be a sandpiper.

Sandpipers are a group of small to medium-sized shore birds, not just one single species. The name is commonly used for many related birds in the family Scolopacidae, though not every bird in that family is usually called a sandpiper. They are often linked with sandy shores, but they also live and feed on mudflats, rocky coasts, marshes, and inland wetlands.

What makes a sandpiper easy to recognize? Many have fairly long legs, slim bills that help them probe into sand or mud, and a familiar stop-and-go running style as they search for food. They usually eat small animals such as worms, insects, and crustaceans. Different kinds vary in size, color, and bill shape, depending on where they live and how they feed.

You might see them traveling in flocks during migration or feeding alone along the shoreline. They are an important part of coastal and wetland ecosystems because they feed on many small creatures and are themselves part of the food chain. From the tiny Least Sandpiper to other well-known shore birds such as the Sanderling, they are a familiar and lively sight wherever land meets water.
