A salter is a person who uses salt to preserve food, especially meat or fish. In historical use, the word can also mean someone who makes salt or deals in it. Both senses come from the time when salt was far more than a simple seasoning. It was a basic part of daily life because it helped keep food edible for longer periods before modern refrigeration.

In one sense, a salter worked directly with food. This person salted fish, pork, or other meat so it could be stored, transported, and sold later. In another sense, a salter was involved in the salt trade itself, making salt from brine or seawater, or selling it as an important good. These jobs mattered because salt supported households, markets, and travel in a world where preserving food was difficult.

The term also appears in more specific phrases. A "pork salter," for example, was someone who cured pork with salt. Today, the word is uncommon in everyday speech, but you may still see it in historical writing, old trade records, or descriptions of traditional food work. It carries the feel of an older world, where the simple act of adding salt could protect a family's food supply and support an entire line of work.
