The saguaro (pronounced sah-WAH-roh) is the iconic tall cactus of the Sonoran Desert, especially in Arizona and northern Mexico. Picture a classic desert scene, and you may imagine these huge plants with their curved arms reaching up into the sky. They grow very slowly, taking many years to mature and bloom, but they can live for more than 150 years. Indigenous peoples in the region have long used them for food and in cultural traditions. Seeing one covered in white flowers is a striking desert sight.

Imagine standing in a wide desert landscape, the sun beating down, and then a giant green sentinel rises before you. That is likely a saguaro cactus, Carnegiea gigantea, one of the best-known symbols of the American Southwest.
