rupiah

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /rˈuːpˈaɪə/

US

  • /ruˈpaɪə/

Description

The rupiah (often written Rp) is the official currency of Indonesia. If you visit Bali or Jakarta, you will exchange your dollars or euros for it to pay for food, transport, hotels, and local goods. It is the money people use in daily life across the country. The name "rupiah" comes from the Sanskrit word rupyakam, which means "silver coin."

You will see notes in denominations ranging from 1,000 to 100,000. Do not be surprised by the large numbers; even a small purchase may cost tens of thousands. Understanding the exchange rate helps when traveling or doing business in Indonesia. For example, if one US dollar equals 15,000 rupiah, then something that costs 75,000 rupiah is about 5 US dollars.
