rumen

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /rˈuːmɛn/

US

  • /ˈrumən/

Description

Imagine a cow chewing its cud - that's the rumen at work. The rumen is not the whole stomach of a cow, sheep, goat, or other ruminant. It is the first and largest compartment in a stomach with several parts. It works like a big fermentation chamber where bacteria help break down tough plant fiber that the animal could not digest by itself. This process gives the animal nutrients and energy from grass and other plants. Without a healthy rumen, these animals would struggle to live on a plant-based diet.
