The term "rockfish" refers to a diverse group of fish, most often species in the genus Sebastes and related fishes in the scorpionfish family, Scorpaenidae. These sea fish are found mainly in the temperate waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Many species live near reefs, rocky bottoms, and kelp forests. They are known for long lifespans, and some can live for more than 100 years. They also grow slowly, which makes them more vulnerable to overfishing and environmental change.

In North America, the name can mean different things depending on the region. On the West Coast, it usually means one of the many Sebastes species sold or caught as food fish. On the East Coast, especially around the Chesapeake Bay, people often use "rockfish" to mean the striped bass (Morone saxatilis), which is a different fish entirely. Because of this, the word can be clear in everyday speech but less exact in science, fishing rules, and seafood labeling, where specific species names are often preferred.

These fish are valued both by commercial fisheries and by recreational anglers. Their flesh is usually mild, white, and flaky, so the name often appears in seafood dishes. However, many species mature late and do not recover quickly once their numbers fall. In the late 20th century, several populations declined sharply because of overfishing. Management and better fishing practices have helped some stocks recover, but the term still carries a strong connection to sustainability. When you see "rockfish" on a menu, asking about the species and where it was caught can give a clearer picture of what is being served.
