They are experts in load distribution, weight limits, and emergency procedures.

Beyond the theater, "rigger" also refers to professionals involved in lifting and positioning equipment in construction, oil drilling, or other industrial settings. These workers attach, guide, and secure heavy loads so cranes or other lifting systems can move them safely. Additionally, the term is used for "parachute riggers"—technicians licensed to pack and maintain parachutes, a role where careful attention to detail is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Whether on a ship, backstage, or at a construction site, a rigger is fundamentally someone skilled at safely managing ropes, cables, lifting gear, and heavy loads—a job demanding both physical strength and a solid understanding of how equipment and forces work.
