Retsina (pronounced reh-TSEE-nah) is not your typical wine. It is a traditional Greek wine with a clear pine-like, resin-like flavor. That taste comes from an old practice: wine was once stored in clay jars sealed with pine resin. Modern makers keep that character by adding a little pine resin during winemaking. The result is usually a dry, crisp wine with a strong smell that can remind people of pine needles and herbs. It is usually served very cold and goes well with bold Mediterranean foods such as fried seafood, garlicky dips, and salty cheeses.

Retsina is a wine with deep roots in Greek history, a drink that still carries the memory of ancient winemaking. For centuries, wine was stored in amphorae, and pine resin was used to help seal them and protect the contents from air. Over time, the wine picked up the resin's smell and taste, and what began as a practical method slowly became a style of its own.

Today, retsina is still closely linked with Greece, even though modern winemaking no longer needs resin as a seal. Producers now add a small amount of pine resin during fermentation to create the traditional character on purpose. It is most often made as a dry white wine, though rose versions also exist. A good example balances its bold resin note with fresh acidity and light citrus or herbal hints.

The flavor can feel unusual at first, especially for people used to more familiar wines, but that strong personality is exactly the point. Retsina is often enjoyed as an aperitif or with meze, and it stands up well to lively flavors like garlic, lemon, olive oil, and salty cheese. In that sense, it is not just a drink but a small taste of Greek food culture and history, best understood slowly, in a chilled glass beside a table full of food.
