The term "retroviral" is an adjective. It means "related to a retrovirus" or "caused by a retrovirus." Retroviruses are a special group of viruses that carry their genetic material as RNA (ribonucleic acid) rather than DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). After entering a host cell, they use an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to turn their RNA into DNA.

You can picture this as a kind of biological rewrite. The virus arrives with instructions in RNA, then converts those instructions into DNA so they can be inserted into the host cell's own genetic material. Because of this step, retroviral infections can be difficult to fully clear. Once the viral DNA is joined to the host genome, it may stay there quietly for a long time before becoming active again.

In real use, "retroviral" often appears in phrases such as "retroviral infection," "retroviral disease," "retroviral vector," or "retroviral replication." HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus that causes AIDS, is the best-known retrovirus, so the word often appears in medical writing about HIV and related research. At the same time, scientists have adapted retroviral systems for gene therapy, using modified viruses to deliver useful genes into cells.

So the heart of the word is not just "virus," but a very specific viral style: one that moves genetic information from RNA back into DNA and often becomes part of the host's genome. When something is called retroviral, it belongs to that process, that family of viruses, or the effects they cause.
