HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus that causes AIDS, is the best-known retrovirus, so the word often appears in medical writing about HIV and related research. So the heart of the word is not just "virus," but a very specific viral style: one that moves genetic information from RNA back into DNA and often becomes part of the host's genome. When something is called retroviral, it belongs to that process, that family of viruses, or the effects they cause.
