Retinopathy is not one single disease. It is a broad term for damage to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that helps turn light into sight. In many cases, it is a sign that another health problem is affecting the eye.

This term covers several conditions with different causes. The best-known type is *diabetic retinopathy, which happens when high blood sugar from diabetes damages the small blood vessels in the retina. Other forms may be caused by high blood pressure, sickle cell disease, infections, injury, or premature birth. In babies born too early, doctors may call it retinopathy of prematurity*.

The signs depend on the type and how far it has progressed. Early on, a person may notice nothing at all. Later, it can cause blurred vision, floaters, trouble seeing at night, blind spots, or sudden loss of vision.

Doctors usually find it through a full eye exam. This may include dilating the pupils and taking detailed pictures or scans of the retina. Treatment depends on the cause and the amount of damage. It may involve better control of the health problem behind it, laser treatment, injections into the eye, or surgery. Early detection is important because treatment can slow damage and help prevent permanent vision loss. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other risk factors, regular eye checkups are an important way to protect your sight.
