The word "rem" first became widely known in science as an abbreviation for "roentgen equivalent man." This unit was used to express the biological effect of ionizing radiation on the human body, not just the raw amount of radiation in the air. Today, the sievert (Sv) is the standard SI unit, so rem is mostly treated as a legacy unit, but it still appears in older texts, safety discussions, and some medical or nuclear contexts. For example, a large whole-body dose measured in hundreds of rem can be deadly, while an ordinary medical X-ray involves only a very small fraction of that.
