rem

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /rˈɛm/

US

  • /ˈrɛm/

Description

The term "rem" shows up in a few very different worlds. In older radiation science, it stands for "roentgen equivalent man," a unit used to describe the effect of ionizing radiation on the human body. In sleep science, REM means "Rapid Eye Movement," the stage of sleep most closely linked with vivid dreams. In computing, it can also mean a comment command in older programming languages, or a CSS unit based on the root font size of a page. It is a short term, but it carries several clear and well-known meanings.

Examples

  1. 1

    Typography

Set the body text to `1rem` and increase the headings from there.

  2. 2

    Button spacing

I changed the button padding from `12px` to `0.75rem` so it scales better with the base font size.

    • Domain

In CSS, `rem` is usually used after a number, such as `1rem` or `0.75rem`.

  3. 3

    Site layout

We use `rem` for spacing across the site to keep the layout more consistent.
