The term "referential" describes something that refers to, points to, or is connected with something else. It is used when a word, sign, statement, image, or idea gets its meaning through that connection. In simple terms, it is about language or expression reaching beyond itself toward a person, thing, concept, text, or situation.

In literature and art, this often appears as allusion. A writer may point to an earlier book, a historical event, or a well-known image. A film may borrow scenes or lines that remind you of older films. In these cases, the work is referential because part of its meaning comes from that outside link. The audience understands more if it catches the connection.

But "referential" is not limited to the arts. In linguistics, it can describe words or expressions that refer to actual things or ideas in the world. A name, a pronoun, or a noun phrase may have a referential use when it points to a specific person or object. In everyday speech, a comment can be referential if it calls back to something both speakers know. In computer science, the word appears in the phrase "referential transparency," where an expression always gives the same result for the same input.

So the central idea is this: something referential directs your attention to something beyond itself. Sometimes that means shared cultural knowledge. Sometimes it simply means that a word clearly points to a real thing. In every case, the meaning comes from the connection.
