The word reconstitution refers to the act of putting something back together, restoring it, or forming it again after it has been broken apart, lost, dried out, or changed. Sometimes this means returning something to an earlier state, and sometimes it means creating a working whole again from separate parts.

In everyday life, this word often appears in food preparation. Powdered milk, dried soup, or juice concentrate can be reconstituted by adding water, which brings them back to a usable form. In science, researchers may speak of reconstitution when they combine parts of a system again in order to study how it works, such as rebuilding a cell-related structure in the lab.

But reconstitution is not limited to objects or substances. It can also describe the return or rebuilding of something less tangible. An organization may go through reconstitution after losing members, a government may undergo political reconstitution after major change, and historians may attempt a reconstitution of past events by fitting scattered evidence into a clearer picture.

The central idea behind reconstitution is that something is not whole anymore, and then it is made whole again. That can happen physically, scientifically, politically, or in storytelling about the past. The result does not always have to be exactly the same as before, but it should be recognizable, usable, or complete again.
