The term "realtor" often comes up when people talk about buying or selling property, but it has a more specific meaning than "real estate agent." A realtor is a licensed real estate agent who is also a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). That membership is not just a label. It means the person agrees to follow NAR's Code of Ethics and professional standards.

Real estate agents can help people buy, sell, or rent property by arranging viewings, discussing prices, negotiating offers, and handling paperwork. A realtor does those same kinds of tasks, but with the added duty of following NAR's ethical rules, such as honesty, fairness, and protecting the client's interests. Members may also use NAR resources, training, and tools to stay current in their field.

In everyday conversation, people often use "realtor" as a general word for anyone who sells houses. Technically, though, only agents who are members of NAR can use this title. In other words, all realtors are real estate agents, but not all real estate agents are realtors.

So if you are starting a big property journey, working with a realtor can mean getting help not only with the practical steps, but also from someone who has agreed to follow a professional code of conduct.
