Rawhide isn't leather in the traditional sense; it's the skin of an animal (usually cattle) after the hair has been removed, but before it undergoes the tanning process that transforms it into soft, finished leather. This means it remains a natural, fibrous material known for its incredible strength and tendency to shrink and harden as it dries.

Historically, rawhide was incredibly important to cultures across the American West. Native Americans used it extensively for everything from tipi covers and clothing to containers, shields, and tools. When European settlers arrived, they quickly adopted rawhide for similar purposes—particularly for making ropes (called reatas), lariats, saddle components, and wagon coverings. Its flexibility when wet and extreme toughness when dry made it ideal for these rugged applications.

Today, the most common use of rawhide is as a chew toy for dogs. The process of chewing helps clean their teeth and satisfy their natural urge to gnaw. However, it's important to supervise dogs while they enjoy rawhide chews, as pieces can break off and pose a choking hazard.

While less common now because of modern materials, you can still find rawhide in traditional crafts, drum making, and historical reenactments. It remains a good example of how people once made strong, useful things from the materials around them. So whether it appears in a craft shop, a history book, or a piece of old ranch gear, rawhide still carries a long and practical story.
