The raven (Corvus corax) is a large, all-black bird in the crow family. It is often confused with the smaller crow, but it usually has a heavier beak, shaggy throat feathers, and a wedge-shaped tail in flight. These birds live across much of the Northern Hemisphere, from cold northern regions to dry desert areas.

Ravens have had an important place in many cultures. For many Indigenous peoples of North America, they appear as clever tricksters or powerful creators. In Western folklore, they are often shown as messengers, signs of death, or creatures tied to magic. This mixed image, both dark and wise, comes in part from their black feathers and their deep, rough calls.

But the raven's reputation is not only based on myth. These birds are highly intelligent and can use tools, solve problems, and remember human faces. They can also copy some sounds, and a few can even imitate parts of human speech. The word "raven" is also used as an adjective for something very dark and glossy, especially hair. In older or literary English, "raven" can also be a verb meaning to seize or eat with great hunger, though that use is uncommon today. Whether it appears in nature, in folklore, or in writing, the raven suggests darkness, intelligence, and mystery.
