Radon is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It may sound scary, and sometimes it is. Because you cannot see or smell it, it can build up in homes and other buildings and become a health hazard by raising the risk of lung cancer. You can think of it as an unseen guest that stays too long. Testing is important, especially in places known to have higher levels, because simple fixes can greatly reduce exposure.
Radon (Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed during the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and sometimes water. It moves into the air and can also enter groundwater. It is not only a household concern. Scientists also study it to learn more about underground rock formations, water movement, and other natural processes. Its possible use in earthquake prediction has been explored, but that is still an area of research rather than an established method.
The name comes from radium, the element from which it was first identified in the decay chain. So while it is invisible and easy to ignore, it is something worth taking seriously. Awareness, testing, and proper mitigation can greatly lower the risk to your health.
