The word comes from "quantum," a fundamental unit of energy or another physical property. In physics, many things are not smooth and flowing but are quantized, meaning they come in specific packets. Light is a classic example: it behaves as particles called photons, which are quanta of light.

But "quantal" is not limited to physics. It is also used in biology, especially for processes that happen in steps. For example, neurotransmitters can be released across synapses not in a steady stream but in quantal releases, meaning individual packets of chemicals stored in vesicles.

You might also encounter "quantal" in pharmacology, where it can describe "all-or-none" responses, such as whether a drug produces a particular effect in each subject rather than how much of that effect appears on a continuous scale.

So, if something is not gradual but happens in jumps, packets, or separate units, it may be described as quantal. The word points to the idea that some things are best understood not as a smooth flow but as discrete, measurable amounts.
