The word "pygmy" began in old stories about very small people. Today, it is mostly used for someone, something, or a type of animal that is much smaller than usual. You will often see it in names such as "pygmy goat," "pygmy marmoset," or "pygmy hippopotamus," where it simply points to small size.

The word has also been used for some Indigenous peoples in Central Africa who are known for short stature. That use is now sensitive and often seen as outdated or offensive, so it is usually better to name the group directly, such as Aka, Efe, Mbuti, or Batwa.

The word "pygmy" has a long and complicated history. It comes from ancient Greek and first appeared in stories about tiny people.
