The word "pygmy" has a long and complicated history. It comes from ancient Greek and first appeared in stories about tiny people. Over time, English began using it more broadly for people, animals, plants, or things that are far smaller than the usual size. That is why it still appears in many common names, especially in zoology, such as "pygmy marmoset," "pygmy hippopotamus," and "pygmy goat."

There is also an important human use of the word. For many years, outsiders used "pygmy" as a general label for several Indigenous peoples of Central Africa, including the Aka, Efe, Mbuti, and Batwa. Today, that label is often considered outdated, inaccurate, or offensive because of its connection to colonial history and because it groups different peoples under one outside name.

For that reason, careful speakers usually avoid using "pygmy" for people unless they are discussing the history of the term itself. In most real situations, it is better to use the community's own name when known. In animal names and other size-based descriptions, however, the word is still standard and usually just means unusually small.

So the story of this word is really about scale and context: it can simply mean "very small," but when it refers to people, it needs special care.
