Imagine walking past a dumpster on a hot summer day, and that awful, sickening smell hits you. That's putrid. It describes something rotting or decaying so badly that it gives off a disgusting odor. It is most often used for things like spoiled meat, dirty water, or dead animals. It can also be used in a figurative way for something morally nasty or deeply unpleasant, like a putrid mood or a putrid scandal.

The word "putrid" comes from the Latin putridus, meaning rotten, and it carries a strong, visceral weight. It's far more than just "bad-smelling"; putrid implies advanced decomposition, a state of being badly spoiled, corrupted, or decayed. Think of fruit left too long on the counter, turning black and oozing, or meat that has been left out until the smell becomes overpowering.

Historically, "putrid" was sometimes used to describe diseases; "putrid fever" referred to a severe and dangerous illness. You would not casually say your coffee is "putrid" just because you do not like the taste.
