puma

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /pˈuːmə/

US

  • /ˈpumə/

Description

The puma, also known as a cougar or mountain lion, is a large wild cat found across the Americas. Unlike lions in Africa, it usually lives alone and hunts alone. It hides well in its surroundings and often catches prey by sneaking close before it attacks. If you are hiking where these cats live, it is smart to make noise so you do not surprise one.

The name "puma" comes from Quechua, a language from South America. "Cougar" and "mountain lion" are common names for the same animal in different places. Outside nature, "Puma" is also the name of a famous sportswear brand.
