Imagine a small seabird with a bright, colorful beak and a serious expression. That's a puffin. These birds spend most of their lives at sea and come to land mainly to breed, often on cliffs or islands where they nest in burrows. Puffins are strong fliers and divers, using their wings to move through the water as they chase small fish. People often connect them with the North Atlantic, but puffins also live in other cold northern seas. If you ever visit a rugged northern coast, you may spot one standing proudly near the edge of a cliff.

The puffin is a small, stocky seabird from the auk family, known for its black-and-white body and large, colorful beak. Many people think first of the Atlantic puffin, but the word can also refer to other closely related birds, such as the tufted puffin and the horned puffin. Puffins are easy to recognize during the breeding season, when their beaks look especially bright and bold. That beak is not only striking to look at; it also helps them carry several small fish at once back to their chicks.

Puffins are excellent divers, using their wings to "fly" underwater as they hunt fish such as herring, sand eels, and capelin. They usually nest in burrows dug into grassy slopes or in spaces among rocks, and they often gather in large colonies. During the breeding season, these colonies can be noisy and full of movement.

Sadly, many puffin populations face threats from climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Because they depend on healthy marine ecosystems and reliable supplies of small fish, changes in the ocean can affect them quickly. Conservation efforts aim to protect both the birds and the places where they breed. So when you picture a wild northern coastline, it is easy to imagine a puffin there too: alert, colorful, and perfectly at home between sea, sky, and cliff.
