The word "puck" has two clear meanings. Today, people usually mean the small, hard rubber disc used in hockey. Players strike it with their sticks, pass it between teammates, and try to shoot it into the other team's net. This is the everyday meaning most learners will meet in sports talk, especially in phrases like "puck control," "puck possession," and "the puck drops" at the start of a game. It can also be used in related sports such as roller hockey.

There is also an older literary and folklore meaning. In that sense, a puck is a mischievous spirit, goblin, or fairy-like being that plays tricks on people. This meaning appears in old stories and in literature, especially in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Puck, also called Robin Goodfellow, is a well-known trickster figure. In modern English, this sense is much less common than the sports meaning, but it still appears in discussions of folklore, fantasy, and classic literature.

So, depending on the context, "puck" may refer to a fast-moving piece of sports equipment or to a playful supernatural being from old tales. The hockey meaning is by far the most common today, while the folklore meaning gives the word its older, more magical side.
