Prostration is a powerful word with several connected meanings, all tied to the image of a person stretched out flat on the ground, usually face down. In its most literal sense, it refers to this physical position. More often, it suggests that the position expresses something strong: deep reverence, worship, submission, or surrender. In religious settings, a worshipper may lower the whole body to the ground as a sign of humility before God. In older royal or ceremonial settings, a person might do the same before a ruler to show obedience and respect.

But the word is not limited to worship or ceremony. It can also describe a state of extreme weakness or collapse. Older medical and general writing uses it for severe physical exhaustion, as in heat prostration, where a person is overcome by heat and left weak or faint. It may also be used for mental or emotional collapse after grief, shock, or disaster, though this use is less common than the physical one. For example, after days without food or water, shipwrecked sailors might be described as lying in a state of prostration on the shore.

The word carries a strong sense of powerlessness, humility, or total depletion. It is stronger than simply bowing or kneeling. It suggests going all the way down, whether by choice as a sign of devotion or because the body has no strength left. In literature, history, and formal writing, it often adds a dramatic sense of complete yielding. So, whether it describes an act of worship, a gesture of surrender, or a condition of extreme exhaustion, prostration points to a person brought fully low.
