Prostacyclin, also known as prostaglandin I2 (PGI2), is a signaling molecule made by the cells that line blood vessels, called the endothelium. It plays an important role in keeping blood flowing well and in helping prevent thrombosis, which means blood clot formation. Unlike signals that make blood vessels tighten, prostacyclin is a strong vasodilator, meaning it relaxes blood vessel walls and widens them so blood can move more easily.

But its job does not stop there. Prostacyclin also slows platelet aggregation, which means it helps prevent platelets, the tiny cell fragments in your blood, from clumping together and forming clots. This matters because too much clotting can lead to heart attacks, strokes, or other serious problems.

The body carefully balances the production of prostacyclin with other substances that encourage clotting, creating a healthy balance. In some conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, or atherosclerosis, that balance can be disturbed. This is where synthetic prostacyclin analogs, medicines made to copy the effects of the natural substance, can help. These drugs are used especially in pulmonary arterial hypertension because they widen blood vessels and improve blood flow.

Researchers still study prostacyclin's role in different diseases and how it may be used in treatment. So while it may sound like a complex word, it names an important substance that quietly helps your circulatory system work smoothly.
