Proctitis refers to inflammation of the lining of the rectum, the final section of the large intestine just before the anus. It's a condition that can range from mild discomfort to significant pain and distress. While it's not usually life-threatening, proctitis can significantly affect quality of life.

The causes of proctitis are diverse. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia or gonorrhea are common causes, but it can also be triggered by inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Sometimes radiation therapy for cancers in the pelvic area can irritate the rectal lining. In some cases, the cause remains unknown; this is called idiopathic proctitis.

Symptoms often include rectal pain, a feeling of needing to have a bowel movement (tenesmus), bleeding with stool, and discomfort during or after defecation. Diagnosis typically involves a digital rectal exam (where a doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum) and may be followed by tests like sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy to visualize the area and take biopsies if needed.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Bacterial proctitis is treated with antibiotics, while inflammatory bowel disease-related proctitis requires medications to manage the inflammation. Supportive care, such as sitz baths (soaking in warm water) and dietary changes, can also help alleviate symptoms.

Because of its sensitive location, proctitis isn't a condition people readily discuss. However, understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options is important for getting proper medical care and managing this often uncomfortable condition.
