What makes prions so dangerous is their ability to replicate without DNA or RNA: they essentially convert healthy proteins into more prions, creating an exponential buildup of misfolded proteins in brain tissue. This causes spongy degeneration of the brain, leaving behind microscopic holes, which is why these illnesses are called "spongiform encephalopathies."

- Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans - a rare and fatal condition.

- Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer, elk, and moose.
Prions are incredibly resilient: they can withstand standard sterilization procedures that kill viruses and bacteria, making them difficult to eliminate from medical instruments or contaminated environments.
