Poxviruses are a large and varied family of viruses known for causing skin lesions, often in the form of pustules, blisters, or scabbed sores. The name "pox" comes from the Old English word pocc, meaning a pustule or ulcer. Historically, this family is best known for the Variola virus, which caused smallpox, a disease that affected humanity for centuries before it was eradicated through a global vaccination effort in 1980.

However, this family includes far more than smallpox alone. It also includes viruses that cause milder illnesses such as molluscum contagiosum, which appears as small, pearly bumps on the skin, and viruses linked to mpox, a disease that can spread from animals to humans and also between people.

Poxviruses are unusual among DNA viruses in several ways. They have very large genomes, meaning they carry a great deal of genetic information, and they replicate within the cytoplasm of host cells rather than relying on the cell's nucleus. Because they are large DNA viruses, they are often more genetically stable than many RNA viruses, such as influenza viruses or the virus that causes COVID-19.

The term "poxvirus" appears often in medical and scientific writing about viral evolution, vaccines, and public health. Understanding how these viruses spread and change is important for preventing future outbreaks. Although the word may sound old-fashioned, this group remains an important subject in modern virology, showing that old diseases and their relatives can still create new problems.
