"Postmodernist" is a term with layers, describing both an intellectual movement and someone who follows its ideas. It is tricky because it is often defined by what it rejects. Essentially, postmodernism arose in the latter half of the 20th century as a critique of "modernism," the dominant cultural trend that came before it. Modernism championed reason, objective truth, and universal values—the belief that science could solve all problems and that there was a single "correct" way to organize society.

Postmodernists, however, argue that these "grand narratives" are often used to justify power structures and suppress alternative viewpoints. Many of them see knowledge as shaped by language and culture, rather than as something perfectly neutral or universal. In this view, truth is not simply "out there" waiting to be found; it is interpreted through human perspectives and social systems.

This leads to several key characteristics: a distrust of metanarratives (all-encompassing explanations), an emphasis on subjectivity, a celebration of diversity, the playful use of irony and pastiche (mixing different styles), and a blurring of the boundaries between "high art" and "low culture."

You'll encounter "postmodernist" in various contexts. In literature, it describes novels that break traditional structures or question the author's own authority. In architecture, it refers to buildings that reject functionalism in favor of ornamentation and historical references. In philosophy, it describes thinkers like Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, who deconstructed established systems of thought to reveal hidden biases.

It's important to note that "postmodernist" can be used both descriptively and critically. Someone might use it descriptively to say, "That film is very postmodern in its fragmented storytelling," or they might use it critically to suggest an argument is "too postmodern," implying it is relativistic or lacks a solid moral foundation. Ultimately, being a postmodernist means shifting away from universal certainties toward an acknowledgment of the subjective, constructed nature of reality.
