"Postmenopausal" describes the period in a woman's life after she has gone through menopause, the point at which menstrual periods have stopped for 12 consecutive months. It does not usually happen suddenly. Before this stage, many women go through perimenopause, a transition during which periods may become irregular and other symptoms may begin to appear.

The term is not just about the absence of periods. These changes are common, but they do not affect everyone in the same way.

Even so, understanding the word is useful when reading about women's health, talking with medical professionals, or learning about aging.
