The word "posterior" comes from Latin and carries the idea of something being behind, at the back, or later than something else. Most often, it appears in formal or technical English rather than casual speech. It is especially common in anatomy, medicine, and statistics.

In medicine and biology, "posterior" is a standard directional term. It describes a structure that lies toward the back of the body or behind another structure. For example, the "posterior cruciate ligament" is one of the ligaments at the back of the knee. In the same medical style, "posterior" can also be used as a polite noun for a person's backside.

The word also has an important use in statistics, especially in Bayesian reasoning. A posterior probability is the updated probability you have after you consider new evidence. If you begin with one guess and then learn something new, the posterior probability is the revised result that comes afterward. Here, the idea is not physical position but what follows after new information.

More generally, "posterior" can mean later in time or order, but this use is fairly formal and much less common in everyday English. Native speakers are more likely to say "later" or "subsequent" in ordinary writing. You may still see "posterior" in careful academic or philosophical prose, especially in fixed expressions such as a posteriori, which refers to knowledge gained from experience or evidence.

So the word lives in two main worlds. In one, it describes the back part of the body or something positioned behind. In the other, it describes something that comes later or is worked out after evidence appears. That mix of physical and abstract meaning gives the word its range, but in both cases it keeps the same basic sense: behind, at the back, or coming after.
