Life, as we know it, is built on chromosomes, the tiny structures that carry DNA. Most animals and plants have chromosomes in matched sets. Humans, for example, have 23 pairs, for a total of 46 chromosomes. This term describes what happens when an organism has more than two complete sets of chromosomes. A diploid organism has two sets, a triploid has three, a tetraploid has four, and the pattern continues from there.

In animals, this condition is often harmful and may lead to sterility or developmental problems. In plants, however, it is much more common and can even be helpful. Many important crops, including wheat, potatoes, cotton, and bananas, have extra chromosome sets. That extra genetic material can sometimes make plants larger, hardier, or better able to adapt.

Seedless watermelons are a familiar example. They are usually triploid, which means they have three sets of chromosomes. Breeders produce them by crossing a diploid watermelon with a tetraploid one. Because the chromosome sets do not divide evenly during reproduction, the fruit develops without normal seeds.

This idea also matters beyond farming. It has played an important role in plant evolution and in the rise of new species. Scientists study it to understand how genomes change over time and how living things adapt.
