Imagine tiny electrical wires running through your body. Those are your nerves. Polyneuritis happens when many of these nerves become inflamed, often leading to weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain. It is usually not a disease by itself, but a sign that something else is wrong. In the past, doctors often connected it with long-term alcohol misuse, but it can also be caused by diabetes, infections, immune system problems, toxins, or vitamin deficiencies. The discomfort often starts in the hands or feet and may slowly move upward, so doctors usually look for the deeper cause.

Polyneuritis literally means "inflammation of many nerves." It refers to a disorder in which several peripheral nerves are affected at the same time. These nerves carry signals between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. In older medical writing, the term was often used for cases where many nerves were inflamed or damaged together. Today, doctors may more often use the related term "polyneuropathy," depending on the exact cause and pattern.

Historically, the term was often linked to nerve problems seen in people with chronic alcoholism, sometimes because of poor nutrition and vitamin deficiency. However, several other causes are also possible. These include diabetes, infections, autoimmune disorders, vitamin B deficiency, toxins, and some medications. In each case, the word points less to one single disease and more to a pattern of nerve trouble that needs to be explained.

Symptoms often begin in both feet or both hands, then spread upward in a gradual way. People may notice pins and needles, burning pain, numbness, reduced reflexes, or muscle weakness. In more serious cases, walking or using the hands becomes difficult. Diagnosis usually involves a neurological exam, tests of how well the nerves carry signals, and blood tests to find the cause. Treatment focuses on two goals: easing the nerve symptoms and treating the condition that caused the problem in the first place.
