The word "pointe" is closely connected with ballet. Most often, it names the technique of rising and dancing on the very tips of the toes, especially in the phrase "en pointe." It can also name the special shoes, usually called "pointe shoes," that are built to support that movement. These shoes have a stiff toe box and sole so trained dancers can balance safely and move with control.
