Ploce is a figure of speech in which a word is repeated for emphasis, often with a deeper or slightly changed sense the second time. The name comes from the Greek ploke, meaning "weaving" or "twining." That image fits well, because the speaker weaves the same word back into the sentence to make the thought stronger or richer.

Unlike epizeuxis, which is the immediate repetition of a word, ploce often leaves space between the two uses, and the second use may carry more weight or a slightly different sense. It is less about simple repetition and more about sharpening the idea or feeling attached to the word.

Consider the line, "His wife's a wife indeed." The first "wife" names the person, while the second "wife" points to the full idea of what a wife should be. Another simple example would be, "A promise is a promise." In that kind of sentence, the repeated word does not merely echo itself. It calls up the duty, value, or character tied to that word.

Ploce is not very common in everyday conversation, but it appears often enough in speeches, stories, and sharp lines of dialogue.
