planeload

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /plˈeɪnləʊd/

US

  • /ˈpleɪnˌloʊd/

Description

Imagine a big airplane touching down and everyone or everything on it arriving together. That is often what a planeload means: one plane's worth of people or cargo. It can mean a full plane, but it does not always have to stress total capacity. You might read about a planeload of tourists reaching a small town or a planeload of emergency supplies being sent to a disaster area. The word gives a clear feeling of many people or goods coming at the same time by air.
