The word placer is most closely tied to mining and geology. A placer is a natural deposit of valuable minerals, such as gold, platinum, tin, or gemstones, concentrated in loose sand, gravel, or similar material. Instead of being locked inside solid rock, these heavy mineral particles have usually been worn away from their original source and carried by water, waves, or glaciers. Over time, they settle in places where the current slows down, creating a deposit that can be mined.

In practice, this is why people speak of placer gold, placer deposits, and placer mining. The word often brings to mind gold panning in a river, but the idea is broader than that. Such deposits can form in stream beds, river terraces, beaches, marine environments, and glacial sediments. The key idea is natural concentration in loose material rather than in hard rock. That is the contrast with "lode" deposits, where the mineral remains in veins or rock formations.

There is also a second, much more general English sense: a placer can be a person or thing that places something. That meaning is valid, but it is less common and usually clear only from context. In modern use, if you see the word by itself, it is most often pointing to the mining or geological sense. So the story of placer is really the story of how moving water and sediment can gather tiny heavy particles into a spot worth searching.
