"Physic" is a word with a long history. For centuries, it was a common term for the art of healing, before modern English settled on "medicine." An old-fashioned doctor was called a "physician" because they practiced "physic," often giving remedies to help the body recover. The word can also mean a medicinal treatment itself, especially in older writing, and very often a purgative.
