Photoreceptors are specialized structures that detect light. In everyday English and in most science contexts, the word usually means the light-sensitive cells in the retina of the eye. These cells convert light into electrical signals that travel through the nervous system and help the brain form visual images.

There are two primary types in the vertebrate retina: rods and cones. Rods are very sensitive to low levels of light, so they help us see at night or in dark places. Cones work better in brighter light and allow us to see color and fine detail. Humans usually have three kinds of cones, each tuned to different parts of the light spectrum.

The process is remarkable: when light hits one of these cells, it starts a chain of chemical changes that leads to an electrical signal. That signal passes through other cells in the retina and then to the brain, where it is understood as sight.

The word can also be used in a broader biological sense. In plants, for example, certain light-sensitive molecules act as photoreceptors by detecting light and helping control growth, flowering, and daily rhythms. In some simple organisms, light-sensitive proteins help the organism react to light in useful ways. So the exact form can differ, but the central idea stays the same: it is something that senses light.

Damage to the photoreceptors in the eye can lead to serious vision problems, including difficulty seeing at night, trouble seeing color, and some forms of retinal disease. Scientists continue to study how to protect or restore these important cells. So when you look at a sunset, read a page, or recognize a face, these tiny light-sensing parts are doing essential work behind the scenes.
