A photocopier, often called a copy machine or even a Xerox, is a common office machine used to make copies of papers, pictures, and other flat items placed on its glass surface. Before scanning and digital files became common, it was the main way to copy important documents quickly. Think of a teacher making worksheets for a class, or a lawyer copying legal papers. Even now, when many offices use digital systems, this machine still matters when people need paper copies for signatures, records, or handing out.

The word "photocopier" describes a machine that uses static electricity and heat to create exact replicas of documents or images. Originally, these machines were large, complex devices requiring specialized training to operate. They worked by shining light onto an original document, transferring the image electrostatically to a drum, then using toner (a fine powder) to adhere to the charged areas before fusing it with heat and pressure onto paper.

Today's photocopiers are often multifunction printers, meaning they can also scan, print, email, and even fax. They have become smaller, faster, more efficient, and more connected to digital networks. You might hear someone say they need to "run off some copies" or "make a photocopy," both referring to the process of using this machine.

The term "photocopier" is becoming less common as these machines evolve into multifunction printers (MFPs). However, it still brings to mind that familiar office device and the slightly frantic energy when everyone needs copies right now. The brand name "Xerox" became so closely linked with photocopying that people often use it as a verb ("Can you Xerox this for me?"), much like people say "Google" instead of "search online."
