Imagine a tiny laser beam working like a very careful tool inside the body. It is a medical procedure in which a doctor uses focused light, usually a laser, to make small, controlled burns in tissue. These burns help seal blood vessels or create small scars that hold tissue in place.
Photocoagulation is not mainly about cutting tissue away. Instead, it creates controlled damage that causes a useful healing response. It is most commonly used by ophthalmologists (eye doctors) to treat problems such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and some forms of macular degeneration. It can also be used in dermatology to treat certain blood-vessel-related skin marks.
Photocoagulation is a precise medical technique that uses light, usually from a laser, to cause localized tissue damage and produce coagulation, or clotting. The word itself explains the idea well: "photo" means light, and "coagulation" refers to the clotting of blood or the thickening of tissue proteins.
The procedure works by delivering a concentrated beam of light energy to targeted tissue. This energy is absorbed by pigments, such as hemoglobin in blood or melanin in the eye, and then turned into heat. The heat causes proteins in the cells to denature and clot, which can seal leaking blood vessels or help bind different layers of tissue together. Unlike some laser procedures that vaporize or cut tissue, photocoagulation mainly heats it enough to create a medical sealing effect.
In ophthalmology, photocoagulation is a cornerstone treatment for several retinal conditions. In diabetic retinopathy, it can seal fragile, leaking blood vessels before they cause serious vision loss. It is also used to treat retinal tears by creating a small "fence" of scars that helps prevent the retina from detaching.
Beyond the eye, dermatologists may use photocoagulation to treat vascular lesions such as spider veins or port-wine stains by collapsing unwanted vessels with heat. Although the idea of burning with light sounds intense, the process is carefully controlled. Side effects such as temporary blurred vision, discomfort, or mild inflammation can occur, but photocoagulation remains an important way to preserve sight and treat some vascular problems with focused energy.
