The idea has broadened a little too, and people may sometimes use the word for another large list of contacts or names. For example, a school might keep an alumni phonebook.

The phrase "cold calling from the phonebook" refers to the practice of randomly dialing numbers in hopes of reaching potential customers, a tactic common in sales before targeted marketing became prevalent. So while the physical book may be fading into history, the idea of a centralized directory—a "phonebook" in its broadest sense—remains relevant in our connected world.
