Ever finish a really tough workout or narrowly avoid a disaster? That sigh of relief is often joined by a "phew!" It is an exclamation people use to show relief, tiredness, or a strong reaction to something hot, stuffy, or smelly. Think of it as your body saying, "That was close!" or "I need a moment." You might say, "Phew! I thought I lost my keys," or "Phew, it's hot in here!" It shows an immediate feeling and is mostly used in speech, casual writing, text messages, or dialogue.

"Phew" is one of those words where the sound almost is the meaning. It is a breathy exclamation used for a few immediate feelings, most often relief after something stressful, difficult, or close to going wrong.
