It is used to make plastics such as Bakelite, as well as epoxy and phenolic resins that appear in adhesives, coatings, and other industrial materials. It is also used in the production of medicines and other chemical compounds.
Phenol is not harmless. It is corrosive and toxic, and exposure can cause serious skin burns and other health problems. Because of that, it must be handled under strict safety rules in laboratories and factories.
