A phagocyte is a type of immune cell that uses the process of phagocytosis to engulf and destroy unwanted matter. This includes foreign particles—such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi—as well as the body's own dead or dying cells. The word itself comes from Greek roots: phagein, meaning "to eat," and kytos, meaning "cell"—literally, an "eating cell."

Phagocytes are not a single type of cell; they include several different kinds, most notably neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Each plays a distinct role in the immune response. Neutrophils are often the "first responders" to infection, arriving quickly at the site of injury. Macrophages are larger and longer-lived; they clean up debris after the initial battle and "present" pieces of the invaders to other immune cells to help coordinate a broader defense. Dendritic cells act as specialized messengers, alerting the rest of the immune system to the presence of specific threats.

The process of phagocytosis is fascinating! The phagocyte extends its membrane around the target, forming a bubble-like structure called a phagosome. This phagosome then merges with another cellular component containing enzymes—the lysosome—which breaks down and destroys the engulfed material.

Phagocytes are essential for both innate (immediate) and adaptive (long-term) immunity. They do not just fight infections; they also help clear away damaged tissue, contributing to healing and maintaining overall health.
