The word "penitentiary" comes from the idea of "penitence," meaning deep sorrow for wrongdoing. Originally, these institutions, first established in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, were not simply meant to lock people up. They were supposed to be places where prisoners would reflect on their crimes, feel remorse, and reform through solitude, hard labor, and religious instruction. That hope for moral change is the reason for the name.

In real life, though, penitentiaries often fell far short of that ideal. Overcrowding, harsh conditions, and abuse were common. In modern English, the word usually refers to a state or federal prison, especially one that holds people serving long sentences for serious crimes. It often sounds more formal, official, or historical than the everyday word "prison."

You will still hear it today in official names, news reports, history writing, and crime fiction. For example, someone might be sent to a state penitentiary, or you might read about Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Many modern institutions prefer terms like "correctional facility," but "penitentiary" still carries the sense of a serious prison and the long history of punishment, reform, and incarceration behind it.
