The patriarchate refers either to the office and jurisdiction of a patriarch in the Christian church or to a social system in which men hold the main authority. In both senses, the word points to an established structure rather than to the power of one individual man.

In church history, a patriarchate is the office, rank, or see of a patriarch, meaning a senior bishop with authority over a major region or tradition. For example, writers may refer to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, or Jerusalem. In this use, the word can describe the role itself, the territory under that role, or the institution connected to it.

Outside the church, the word can describe a social order where men, especially fathers or male elders, control family life, property, leadership, and public authority. In older societies this could shape inheritance, family line, marriage customs, and political power.
