Pasteboard refers to a stiff, heavy material traditionally made by pasting layers of paper together until they reach the desired thickness. Unlike the corrugated cardboard used for shipping today, pasteboard is solid and smooth, making it ideal for precision work. From the 16th through the 19th centuries, it was the backbone of many industries, used for everything from stiffening garment collars to creating the "boards" in hardback bookbinding. It was the essential material for the early production of playing cards, which is why cards are still occasionally referred to as "pasteboards" by enthusiasts.

In literature, the term often carries a sense of artifice or superficiality. Because pasteboard was often used for signs, props, and other flat theatrical or decorative pieces, calling something "pasteboard" suggests it is two-dimensional or fake. A "pasteboard hero" is someone who looks brave on the surface but lacks true substance or courage.

Interestingly, in the 19th century, "pasteboard" was also common slang for a visiting card or calling card. To "drop one's pasteboard" meant to leave a card at someone's home to acknowledge a social visit. While modern plastics and composite materials have largely replaced it in industry, the word remains a favorite for writers who want to evoke a vintage, slightly fragile, or theatrical atmosphere. It serves as a reminder of a time when even our most common sturdy materials were the result of careful, manual layering.
